Day 5: Arriving in Castellina In Chianti
We arrived in the small hill town of Castellina in Chianti around 4:00 in the afternoon on day five.
We had lunch in Siena on our way and we were looking forward to three nights in one place. Colle Lungo, our home for the next three days, is an 18th century farmhouse in the middle of the Chianti region. It is now an Agriturismo, or working winery with a bed and breakfast. Our one bedroom apartment was fully equipped with a kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living area and fireplace. If we were going to spend a week or more in one place, this would be the one. We unpacked our bags, took a quick stroll around the property and got right down to the business of relaxing in wine country. We headed down to the terrace overlooking the vineyards with a plate of sliced sausage, Pecorino cheese, fresh bread, olive oil (from our shopping trip in Pienza) and a complementary bottle of Colle Lungo's Chianti Classico. We never made it into town that night, I got a fire going in the fireplace and then we prepared an Italian feast including an Antipasto plate, Pici pasta with red sauce, roasted peppers and grilled eggplant. We were in heaven...
Day 6: A day off in Castellina In Chianti
On day six a cold rain greeted us as we woke. After a morning stroll through the vineyards we decided we could use a day off so we headed into town for some grocery shopping and exploring. Since it was Saturday, it was market day in Castellina in Chianti. Vendors, farmers and butchers lined the main street with fresh produce, meats cheeses, clothing and shoes. We stocked up on some fresh groceries and bought some sausage to cook for dinner that night from the butcher. We returned to Colle Lungo, prepared some Paninis for lunch and found a comfortable spot under the covered porch overlooking the vineyards. We spent the afternoon relaxing and drinking wine. I even found time to enjoy one of the Cuban cigars I purchased in Milan. Not a bad way to waste away the day. Tomorrow, we will make the drive into Florence for the day.

Below the main house th the left there was a community living room for gathering with other guests. The living room also included the bar where you could select bottles of wine to drink any time of the day or night and just mark it down on a paper. The round table inside the arch is where you picked up your fresh bread delivered every morning.

Below the main house was a beautiful pool and terrace. Both overlooked the hills and Colle Lungo vineyards. There were also Olive trees, Almond trees, Walnut trees and Fig trees just below the terrace.

Looking up from the lower terrace. Freash herbs were planted all throughout the beds and planters along the steps. A small restaurant that served breakfast was located to the left where the railing is.

We made a friend of the local cat. He followed us all over the property.

On day six the weather was looking a bit dark so we took a walk around the property. This is a view from the lower terrace over the vineyards.
